What is Baccarat?

Baccarat is a game that can be found at many casinos across the globe. It is played with either six, seven or eight standard decks of cards that are shuffled together. The game can be played by up to 14 players, although only two hands of cards are dealt – the player hand and the banker hand. The object is to correctly predict which hand will have a total closest to nine. Players place wagers on one of the two hands and may also bet on a tie. A winning Player Hand wins a full bet, while a winning Banker Hand pays out 95% of the stake. However, the casino must pay a 5% commission on the banker bet.

The game is simple to learn and follows a fixed set of rules. There are only three possible outcomes: the player hand, the banker hand or a tie. Generally, the hand with the highest total wins, and the score is the sum of all pips (the dots on the face of the card that indicate clubs, diamonds, hearts and spades) in the cards dealt. Picture cards are worth zero points, while tens and the number cards count as their face value. Aces, on the other hand, are worth one point. When a hand’s total crosses 9 or enters double digits, the second digit becomes the actual value of the hand.

A tying hand is the least desirable outcome and results in a loss for both the player and the banker bets. However, the house edge on the tie bet is higher than the house edge on the banker or player bets, which is why most serious baccarat players avoid this bet.

Baccarat is traditionally a table game, and the layout of the table can vary between casinos. Typically, there are from seven to 14 seats for players and a space for the dealer. Six decks of cards are used and the croupier will shuffle them together. The cards are then dealt to the player boxes, with one card being placed in each box. The next card is placed in the Banker box and so on.

During the game, the players and the croupier will both bet on which hand will win. There are various betting options, but the most common is the Banker Bet. A bet on the Banker hand will pay out nine to one if correct, while a bet on the Player Hand will pay out 8 to 1. A third option is a bet on the Tie, which pays out at eight to one but comes with a much higher house edge of over 14 percent.

Advanced baccarat players use a pattern system to reduce the house edge by tracking winning streaks. This is done by observing the pattern of shoes, which tend to zigzag between banker and player wins with double win streaks appearing for both. Whenever a double streak appears, the player should increase their bets on the opposite hand to maximize their profits.
